EO stands for Electricity Online. Founded in the UK in 2015 the firm is based in Norfolk. The first EO EV charging unit was created by the founder Charles Jardin in an old pig shed on his grandfather’s farm in Suffolk. EO now operates in around 30 countries around the world and has recently won a contract to supply EV chargers at Amazon sites to support their fleet electrifction. 👏🌍

The EO Mini Pro 2 is one of three EV home chargers that EO currently offers. The EO Mini Pro 2 has a maximum charging capacity of 7.2kWh, unlike the EO Basic which can go up to a whopping 22kWh. The unit is smaller than the EO Basic but has lots of additional features such as scheduling, solar charging, and optional power balancing. EV also produces the EO mini which has fewer features than the EO Mini Pro 2 and is not eligible for an OLEV grant.

You can expect to pay around £595 installed with an OLEV grant.

On Trustpilot EO currently has a score of 3.1 out of 5 stars. 50% of reviewers have rated EO as bad. You can take this with a pinch of salt as there are only 4 reviews on Trustpilot but the main concern is stated as the connection between the app and the charger not working❌ General reviews online are very good. Customer service is highlighted as friendly and efficient.✅

There are lots of positive reviews online about friendly customer service and efficient communication from EO. Any issues seem to relate to the EO app but customer service is rated quite high which is always a good sign!

When using the app you can preset the electric vehicle that you have. Based on the percentage of charge you have when you start charging the app will tell you roughly how long charging will take. (There’s no API integration so you cant take advantage of any snazzy API options you may have on your car). The app allows users to easily lock/unlock and schedule charging. There are preset options for scheduling if you have Octopus Go and off-peak charging BUT it doesn’t integrate with Octopus Agile or dynamic pricing which is a shame.

If you have solar panels the app allows for scheduling solar charging with a stop and start time. So you can set the EO Mini pro2 to charge for example when the sun comes up and stop a few hours later. The important point to be aware of is that the EO Mini Pro 2 always draws a minimum of 6 amps while on solar charging mode. It will go up if your solar production increases but it won’t drop below 6 amps and it doesn’t pause the charging like some other charging units!

A great feature of the app is that it allows you to view and download historical charging data. Plus if you have input your tariff you’ll also get the costings too.🌟

To install the app you need to scan the barcode on the box. The only issue is that there doesn’t seem to be an option to set up the charger by inputting the serial number. So if the bar code is worn or the camera on your phone isn’t working then I think you will need to call EO for assistance.

The customer app and the engineers’ app are the same but as a customer, you don’t have access to any of the installer settings, which I think is safer! EO can change some of the engineer settings remotely if you need to do so in the future. So there’s no need to call out an engineer.

Finally, it’s important to be aware that firmware automatically updates. The end-user doesn’t have the option to select if and when to perform updates. I review EVERYTHING so I would really want the option to review updates and user experiences before updating any of my devices but it’s done automatically with the EO Mini Pro 2.

Well, if you class scheduling charging as smart charging then yes it does BUT without being able to integrate with API’s I don’t personally think it’s that smart compared to other chargers on the market!

There’s a phone number (which some charging compies don’t offer) which is great!

+44 (0)333 77 20383

Lines are open 9am – 5pm, Monday – Friday If your an EO customer their website states their lines are open 24/7.

There are various emails on EO’s website.

You also have the option to reach out to them on social media.

If your installer is struggling to get the charging unit to connect with the app then most probably they haven’t set the correct amp within the unit.

I love the size of this unit. As well as being made in the UK the size of the unit must be its biggest selling point. The fact it has 4 colours will also appeal. Finding an EV charger where customer service is contactable by telephone 24/7 is also unusual! I am all for direct messaging companies on social media but you can’t beat a phone line when you’re literally at the end of your tether! 🤦‍♀️🤓

The app ticks a lot of boxes. It doesn’t allow you to take advantage of dynamic pricing BUT this may not be a concern for those with offpeak EV tariffs who can schedule charging quite easily using the EO app. I think if you are looking for simple scheduling with a small charger that doesn’t stand out on the front of your house this is a good choice.

It’s great that solar charging is available as standard on this unit but I think you’d really benefit from the additional solar charging features to maximise efficiency.

As a firm, I think EO Charging is a good choice. They are building great relationships with lots of large-scale businesses and as I understand it they have won the contract to charge the fleet of Amazon electric vehicles.

I like the power balancing feature which is an added extra on the EO Mini Pro 2 this will definitely help as homes expand now or in the future. I’d like to see the charger being able to integrate with API’s but maybe this will come!

This EV charger may be small but it doesn’t seem as easy as others to install. I think the main issue is the live, neutral, and earth are on the front-facing side of the charger. With there being no PEN fault protection you will also need added additional installation work. EO suggests installing a Garo earth device. This is an issue for the installer, not the customer, so it’s just an observation rather than a point of concern!

Yes, I would buy this charger. EO is a rapidly expanding company with a good reputation. On their website, they have all the information you need to get an installer’s quote. Scheduling is straightforward and even though I have mentioned that the charger doesn’t integrate with dynamic pricing I would, at the moment, opt for a dedicated EV charging tariff such as Octopus GO. The charger is very uncomplicated as is the app and it would look quite neat on any wall. Having a 24/7 telephone line is a big plus for me too even though I would hope that I would never need to use it!

I think a lot of people would go for the untethered version which isn’t an option with the Wallbox Pulsar Plus. The untethered charger would be my first choice. The unit looks neater without the cable hanging around and there’s possibly less wear and tear with it not being outside in the elements. In reality, untethered EV users report leaving the charging cable plugged in when they are busy or it’s raining. This leads to the risk of the EV charging cable being stolen. So you may well want to opt for a tethered charger that has less risk of theft and you always have the cable to hand when you are in a rush. It’s all down to personal choice.

EO Mini Pro 2 charger reviewed by Sarah at www.evcharger.today

You may also wish to read my review of the Wallbox Pulser Plus.

How does the EO Mini Pro 2 compare at price?
